There’s A New Kid In Town

USSCAFleet705 EYC webActually, it’s a boat, not a kid. And it’s certainly not new – but maybe it is to Annapolis, sort of. Of what do we speak? Why, the Sunfish of course! Please read on.

Jobson Sunfish by Larry Martin webYou may or may not be aware that a Sunfish fleet is showing signs of life at EYC and our sister club, SSA. Up to a dozen Sunfish were seen on the line during the 2017 Tuesday night races. The skippers thereof are not too proud (isn’t there another '70s song there somewhere?) to admit that they no longer need the drama and excitement associated with some other single-handed dinghies. The simplicity and stability of the boat are pretty darned attractive, especially for those of us with a few miles on our odometers.

If you are on the fence about racing a Sunfish again, consider the following:

  • Although there is certainly no running backstay, there is an easy way to tweak the rig on the water to adjust helm
  • While reefing isn’t part of the picture, there is a simple way to set up the rig to reduce power – also easily adjustable on the water
  • There are now outhaul and downhaul controls as well as a (very) rudimentary vang which permit adjustments to sail shape
  • Post-1990 Sunfish are not like those of your youth (here “your” means those of you who remember the “There’s A New Kid In Town“ song). Bigger blades and a fuller sail make for much better performance. Not exactly (or remotely close to) a Moth, but much improved upwind
  • Used boats are cheap, as are the sails
  • Local Annapolis Sunfish fleet #705 was formed in 2017 and is recognized by the United States Sunfish Class Association (USSCA)
  • EYC has 6 recreational Sunfish available to qualified members for a nominal fee
  • The 2018 racing calendar will include three Sunfish open regattas hosted by SSA (open to EYC members for a nominal fee)
  • Tuesday night races offer practice all season long. Summer TESOD are open races hosted by SSA (EYC members may participate.)

Speaking of our EYC Member Access program, we not only have six Sunfish available, but also eight stand up paddleboards (SUP,) four adult kayaks, two child size kayaks and three J22’s for qualified member use! And, if you are just starting to sail, we have a children’s sailing program, adult classes and private lessons on the schedule to help get you out on the water. Check out the EYC Boating Programs and Member Access page for the nominal fees and class registration.

Welcome to EYC

Not your traditional blue blazer club, EYC is built on activity, on the water and ashore. Our members are involved in a diverse range of boating activities, supported by social events and strong camaraderie. Known for our million-dollar view of the Severn River and Annapolis, EYC also is recognized in the Chesapeake Bay region and beyond as a club capable of managing major championship regattas, Friday night Beer Can races, and everything in between, as well as providing great social networking for cruising, parties, and charity events. It’s all about life on the water, and all about fun.
