Remember the Baltimore Sailabration in 2012? This year, September 6-16 is the Star-Spangled Spectacular with more tall ships, 3 appearances of the Blue Angels, and various other hoopla and folderol.
EYCers: If you are planning to sail or come by land yacht to Baltimore, specifically from 11-14 September, the following provides details on how to join the EYC cruisers at Henderson's Wharf in Fells Point. Boat slips filled up by June throughout the Inner Harbor; however, there are public garages in the Fells Point area and some street parking and a water taxi option. The September issue of Chesapeake Bay Magazine has an excellent article on this Bicentennial event.
The Star-Spangled Spectacular is a free festival "that celebrates the 200th anniversary of our National Anthem.” Tall ships, Navy ships and the Blue Angels will come to Baltimore’s famed Inner Harbor to celebrate 'The Star-Spangled Banner.'" Several EYC cruisers have slips at Henderson's Wharf. As the EYC cruise leader for this event, Rob Greve wants to ensure all EYC members (not just cruisers) or others who are staying at another Baltimore marina or driving, to know that they are welcome to join us for "happy hour" at 1630 Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Henderson's. Look for the EYC burgees (BYOB and some snacks to share) .
There's lots to do and see and Henderson's Wharf Marina at Fells Point is a great location from which to watch the Blue Angels (practice on Friday, shows on Saturday AND Sunday). Fireworks on Saturday night will be "launched from six barges that will stretch three miles from the Inner Harbor to Fort McHenry." (Bring a folding chair.) To gain access to the marina, when you're at Fells Point call Rob at 443-995-1172 for details on access. Once through the gate, walk to DOCK F, the Tiki Bar and look for the EYC burgee probably along row E.
Some Helpful Hints for boaters:
1. For those arriving by boat, temporary regulations for recreational vessels during Star-Spangled Spectacular have been established. Recreational boaters should familiarize themselves with the regulations before going out on the water September 11-15, 2014 and follow instructions for contacting the USCG on channel 16 to motor through the controlled areas to your marina.
2. Approaching Henderson’s Wharf. Note the “blue shack” which is what the marina map is calling the “check in stand”. This is NOT where you check in; you'll need to hail Henderson's on channel 16 and also call on cell with an ETA. The specific "row" will determine if you bear east (right) from the blue building /Tiki Bar or westerly (left). These are floating docks and if you’re able, we suggest backing into the slip. If it's a windy day (cross wind), we suggest bow-in tie up.
