August 2016: The Green Team continues to move forward on our three major initiatives, Solar Energy, Clean Regattas and Environmental Education:

Solar Energy & Energy Efficiency Initiative: The Solar Workgroup is working with RER Energy Group who is han-dling the permitting process and awaiting information on final connection charges from BGE for the project. A final decision on moving forward with the proposed RER Contract will be made by the EYC Board when all the information is in hand. For more information on the solar energy proposal, please read the VFB June 2016 “Around the Green Can” column.
Clean Regatta Initiative: Our Clean Regatta Workgroup and volunteer Green Ambassadors worked hard to ensure that the 2016 EYC Boomerang Race which was held July 9 - 10 was a “Sailors for the Sea” gold-level certified regatta and that our ongoing race season is “green.”

Sixty-one boats participated in the Boomerang race on July 9 and over 400 people attended the after race party on July 10. During the party, three EYC members served as “Green Ambassadors” helping to ensure that all waste was either recycled or composted, a task made easier by the fact that the food waste, dinnerware and flatware were compostable and cups and cans went into recycling.

During the event, four 55-gallon bags of recyclables and four 39-gallon bags of compost were collected. Upon submission of our final report to “Sailors for the Sea,” we received formal certification as a gold-level “Clean Regatta.”

Environmental Education Initiative: To increase awareness of environmental issues and EYC’s “green” efforts, a series of small posters have been developed that will be displayed in the clubhouse and utilized in other education efforts.EYC Poster Runoff Reduction blue green and grey

The “Green Can - Did you know?” poster series indicates various ways that EYC is addressing key environmental concerns such as runoff reduction, sustainable energy and recycling. We will highlight each month a different poster in the VFB.

Our poster for this month is Runoff Reduction. During the construction of our new clubhouse EYC made a decision to install a pervious concrete parking lot, rain barrels and rain gardens to reduce runoff to the Bay. Our environmentally friendly parking lot and grounds are significantly reducing EYC’s impact on the Bay.
