Thanks to all of those who attended the 2016 Annual Membership Meeting. This year’s meeting was highlighted by the announcement of the 2016 Volunteer of the Year, Palma Wilson.
The selection couldn’t be more appropriate as Palma’s efforts seem to be never ending. Her volunteer efforts span multiple committees as well as the EYC Foundation for which she is a board member. I can attest first hand that she couldn’t be better to work with and her spirit and level headed approach serve the EYC membership exceptionally. And if that were not enough she’s just an all round “good egg!” Congrats, Palma, and thanks for making my job so much better!
One of the things that we have learned through the years is that our members procrastinate terribly when it comes to reserving space for EYC events. I certainly understand the thinking behind why people wait until the last minute given the busy lifestyles that many of lead BUT, you should know that this can affect the service we provide to our members and ultimately cost the club money.
For example, we had about 60 people reserve space for our annual Founders Day celebration after the Annual Meeting. Actual attendees were closer to 130 people. This makes staffing and providing food for the event extremely challenging. Our chefs do a great job of trying to stretch what they have in the kitchen but when this happens it can mean we run out of food or don’t have the appropriate number of staff members to provide the level of service we expect.
Sure, we could have turned people away and said “sorry we’re full” or “reservations were required” but that isn’t our goal either. I wanted to include as many of our members in what turned out to be a terrific event.
The moral of the story is that we request that our members please try to reserve space for special events in advance (even if only a few days before) so that we can make our events special! We thank you in advance for the consideration and look forward to some exciting holiday events coming in December.
Just a reminder that the club will close for two days in early January to perform building maintenance. The exact dates have not yet been determined but we will populate the calendar with those days as well as include an announcement in the blast to alert our members in advance.
