PCI DSS Compliance
If you are like me you have had at least one of your credit cards changed out in the last year or two because of breaches in security from Home Depot, Target or some other institution. I have had three cards changed out and one of them twice in the last eight months! Therefore, I thought I would take the opportunity to inform members of the steps EYC takes to protect your credit card information since more and more this is becoming a part of how we live in a world where technology seems to always be at least a few steps ahead.
First, you may be unaware that the Board approved an investment in new point of sale hardware and software just a few months ago to better protect your data. This software supports proper PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) compliance and was the primary impetus for the change in point of sale systems.
To better understand how we process your data understanding the process is critical. In a typical transaction, you hand over your credit card to a server or bartender when you pay your tab. They swipe your card in our system and return with the receipt and your card. The data from the swipe is immediately encrypted and, with the exception of the last four digits, cannot be viewed by anyone, not even a manager with proper access credentials.
January 1, 2015
Welcome to 2015! It’s hard to believe we are in the New Year already. I remember as clear as day the millennium and all of the “end of the world” theorists waiting for all of the lights to go off and their computers to shut down at the stroke of midnight. Well, we didn’t have anything nearly as dramatic this year but I hope everyone had a warm and wonderful holiday with their family and friends.
I look forward to an exciting new year at the club with some fine tuning of the clubhouse, some exciting changes within our committees and of course the usual comradery which is a mainstay of our “little club that could.”
I encourage all of our members to maintain their volunteerism at the club this year. It is this connectivity that breeds community and the EYC culture that most clearly defines who we are as a membership.
Boat Show Bash
November 1, 2014:
I wanted to take a moment to thank all of the volunteers who helped make this year’s Boat Show Bash run so smoothly. Particular thanks should go to the “head honcho” Carol Vilardo and her very capable sidekick Palma Wilson, who stepped in as chief for the operation of the event while Carol was on a much deserved vacation. The event ran seamlessly and although the turnout was less than what we had hoped for it was clear everyone had a terrific time.
We will be brainstorming in the next couple of weeks on the approach for 2015 and encourage your participation with the committee. We also want to remind our membership that the EYC Foundation and the Anne Arundel County Court Appointed Special Advocates for Kids (CASA) were the 2014 recipients of our auction proceeds and we are thrilled to be a part of their altruistic efforts.
Founder’s Day & EYC Birthday Party
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for another fun party at the EYC clubhouse on November 8 immediately following the Annual Meeting which will be held at the Loews Hotel Power Plant.
Admission to the event is FREE and there will be some simple EYC “throw back” food options in addition to an open bar for beer, wine and rail drinks. The party commences shortly after the conclusion of the meeting and will last for 3 hours. So stop down and reminisce with your friends about the good ol’ days!

2015 Annual Meeting
Thanks to all of our members who attended the 2015 Annual Meeting at Loews Hotel. The turnout was terrific and we unanimously welcomed back the entire Board of Governors for the New Year. In my world that is a great vote of confidence toward their efforts in 2014. As many of our members are aware the challenges they faced in 2014 were sometimes great. So congratulations, and sometimes condolences J, to the entire Board for their re-election.
I would also like to take a moment to congratulate Holly O’Hare for being the recipient of the A2B Volunteer of the Year Award. Holly’s contributions to the club have been great and she has worked tirelessly toward making EYC’s junior sailing program one of the best around.
Lastly, I would like to say thank you to Pam Ray for her terrific presentation on behalf of the EYC Foundation. The Foundation is doing a great job and looks to have a fabulous energy and plan of action for 2015 so please take a moment to read about their efforts. Keep up the good work!
October 1, 2014:
The J/80 Worlds Regatta is upon us! By the time this article is published the international regatta will be well underway. Please join us in showing our competitors and guests what it means to be among the amazing EYC community. Our Race Committee and J/80 Worlds Organizing Committee have done an amazing job of putting together a world class regatta and should be congratulated.
