Your Sailor's Level?

Novice: No sailing experiences. First time sailors who are comfortable around the water and wearing a personal flotation device (PFD).

Seaman - Beginner: No (minimum) sailing experience required. Focus on boating safety, terminology, wind awareness, basic sail trim, and steering a course.

Mate - Intermediate: Proficient at basic sailing. Introduction to rules of the road, basic navigation, boat and sail controls, expanded tiller time, upwind sailing, and intro to racing.

Skipper - Advanced: Capable skipper and crew. Focus on advanced boat handling, course sailing, starting a race, racing rules, tactics, and strategy in both skipper and crew roles.

Opti (ages 6-10)

Our Opti program uses the Blue Dragon Pram designed for ages 6-10 & up to 100lbs. We offer several levels of learn to sail including:

Opti Tots, Novice ages 6-8  (No experience required)

This six-week evening class is geared for young children comfortable on the water. This introductory class emphasizes FUN while teaching basic terminology, seamanship, boat handling, and safety. Activities include sailing, paddling, crafts, and games. Parents/guardians are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Cost: $245/$210EYC Member, includes t-shirt. Evenings: 5:30 - 7:30PM

  • Session 1: Monday, June 25 - July 30
  • Session 2: Thursday, June 28 - Aug 2
  • Session 3: Mon-Friday, July 2-6 *No July 4th - Prorated

Opti Seaman, Beginner ages 7-9 (No experience required)

This one week, half-day class introduces basic seamanship, including rigging, and steering. Through innovative and fun on-the-water activities, kids are introduced to water safety, boat controls, basic sailing maneuvers, basic seamanship, wind direction, sailing a course, and STEM activities. Sailors will sail solo or in pairs depending on size and comfort level.

Costs: $245/$210 EYC Member, includes t-shirt. Morning/AM, 9AM - Noon  or Afternoon/PM 1PM - 4PM

  • Session 3: July 2 - July 6 PM (*No class July 4) - Prorated

Opti Mate Intermediate age 8-10 | 40+lbs (Need basic sailing knowledge and experience)

This one week, half-day class is a continuation of the Opti Seaman course. Sailors will sail solo to build confidence skippering on all points of sail in a variety of wind conditions. Activities include on-water games to refine boat handling skills, longer sails, and STEM activities.

Costs: $245/$210 EYC Member, includes t-shirt. Morning/AM, 9AM - Noon  or Afternoon/PM 1PM - 4PM

Opti Skipper Advanced Ages 9 and up (Must be proficient at skippering)

This one week, half day class is a continuation of the Opti Mate Course focusing on more advanced skills and into the fun of junior racing. The program offers confident solo skippers the opportunity to learn and develop their racing skills at the junior level. All our Opti Skippers will expand their skills through daily lessons and reviews of on-the-water drills. Our sailors will end the week with a fun regatta.

Costs: $245/$210 EYC Member, includes t-shirt. Afternoons/PM 1PM - 4PM

Bay/STEM Week, Intermediate, ages 8-11  (Must have beginner sailing experience)

This one week full day class is an adventure based program using dinghy sailing, paddle boarding, kayaking, and powerboating to explore the Chesapeake Bay, its ecology, history and culture. In addition to boating, students will explore environmental and STEM activities through the Maritime Museum, Living Oceans Foundation, and a variety of other local maritime industry visits including a local sail loft and boat yard. A trip on a larger cruising sailboat is also included.

Costs: $435/$395 EYC Member, includes t-shirt.  Note: Kids bring a bag lunch daily
