May 1, 2016: Halleluiah! We are back on the water!

Rockfish season is open, the Ice Breaker Cruise is history, Wednesday Night Races are back, NOODS are here, and Beer Cans begin May 6th. Yipppeee!

I don’t know about the rest of you, but a day out on a boat on the beautiful Chesapeake Bay just sets the molecules in my body in the right order.

To get the excitement going about our first fundraising regatta, Leukemia Cup, EYC will be hosting a Wednesday Night Racing Leukemia Cup Launch Party. This will be Wednesday, May 11, from 5 – 9 p.m. in the clubhouse and on the lawn.

The evening will feature live music by Roger Carlsen, Jeff Goldring, and the November Blues Band. The grill will be going and a bar in the newly remodeled Aft Deck, in addition to the regular bar and dining menu in the clubhouse. A portion of the proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Maryland Chapter’s Leukemia Cup Regatta.

For those who not aware, the Leukemia Cup Regatta originated at EYC 24 years ago and regattas are now held across the country. This regatta is something we should be very proud of as a club and should celebrate and support.

Shhhh! It’s a secret! But our goal, with our partner-in-crime Annapolis Yacht Club, is to rally with more Chesapeake Bay yacht clubs in 2017, the 25th year of Leukemia Cup Regatta, and to out fundraise San Francisco Yacht Club. Stay tuned!

So come on down to EYC the night of May 11th and support Leukemia Cup! If you have a sailboat, there is still time to register for the Leukemia Cup Regatta, which will be Saturday, June 4. You do not have to be a regular racing boat to participate, there are lots of classes.

If you don’t have a sailboat, there are lots of volunteer opportunities, and you can find them at http://eastportyc.org/team-eyc. Information and registration will be available on May 11 during the party or check out http://eastportyc.org/leukemia-cup.

For those looking for a fantastic cruise this month, be sure to check out the Memorial Day Weekend Wye River Rendezvous. EYC rents the Wye Island Natural Resources Management Area Lodge and Facility on Granary Creek—a gorgeous location!—and holds a fabulous weekend of fun, games, and great food. Several other clubs in the area participate in the rendezvous, so this is a wonderful opportunity to meet kindred spirits. Families are highly encouraged to participate and with all the fun activities there is something for everyone. All the information and registration can be found here, http://eastportyc.org/wye-island.

To keep your boat safe and bountiful this year, the Blessing of the Fleet will be held on Sunday, May 8, 2 – 4 p.m. We are fortunate to have the Reverend Jeff Paulson to officiate and bagpiper Randy Welch returning again this year for the ceremony.

Those who have boats at the EYC marina, please try to "dress" them or display your burgee proudly. Bringing your boat to the club for the event? There are rumors of an award for the "best dressed" vessel parading past the club. Stay tuned for details. The Blessing begins at 2 p.m. with a memorial to those we have lost during the past year and continues with an individual blessing for every vessel in the marina and on the premises, as well as those moored and passing nearby.

If you can’t bring your boat to the club for the event, never fear – once again there will be vials of blessed water to take away and share with your vessel wherever she lies.

Just as we all love our boats, we love the water that enables us the joy of boating. However, as in any good love affair, both parties involved must take care of the needs of the other. There is no doubt in my mind that EYCers love the waters that surround us, and to ensure that we take care of those waters I have appointed a special committee.

The Green Committee, first assembled as a sub-committee of the 2014 J/80 Worlds, will be working to ensure that EYC is a good steward of the environment and of the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia Tippie Farrell will be chairing this committee and their email address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Please check out their section on the website to see all of great initiatives EYC has already accomplished and the committee’s goals. Also, please check out the Sailors for the Sea “Green Boating Guide http://sailorsforthesea.org/programs/green-boating-guide, which was released on Earth Day 2016, to see what each of us can do as boaters to “turn the tide” as it relates to water quality and the environment.

See you on the water!
