August 1, 2016: Happy Summer!

EYC has been hopping this summer! There have been lots of great shoreside events, fantastic racing, sold-out sailing lessons, and time on the water. Just as it all should be during the height of summer in Annapolis.

The inaugural EYC Boomerang Race was a smashing success! Congratulations to the team that has been researching and planning this race for the past two years. The perfect temperature, 15-knot breeze all night, gorgeous crescent moon, and shooting stars made for one of the most spectacular nights on the Bay EVER.

Breakfast courtesy of Grumps hit the spot at 0600. Lunch thanks to Annapolis Smokehouse and the afternoon family friendly party was raved about by sailors and their families as being the perfect balance needed in the sailing community to make families feel welcome at a sailing event. As you can see, the biggest obstacle we have is how to repeat this next year!

The next not-to-be missed regatta and regatta party is the Boatyard Bar & Grill Regatta to Benefit C.R.A.B. (or the CRAB Regatta) Saturday, August 20. A pursuit-start regatta, party featuring the rocking band Misspent Youth, at EYC, all to raise funds for Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating. A win-win all around!

Speaking of other racing successes, I have to give a shout-out to the Friday night Beer Can Races, and particularly Steve Weber and Judi Kahan, for the fun time Friday nights have become.

If you have not stopped by the Friday night after-race party, you need to make an effort to do so. The vibe is completely family-friendly, prizes and games abound, grill is going with burgers and hotdogs, and the bar and dance floor are open in the Aft Deck. The perfect beginning to a summer weekend!

The next generation of boaters have been busy this summer with sold-out and near-sold-out sailing sessions. Hard to believe, but the Junior program will be wrapping up in the next few weeks. Although lessons will be coming to a close, the Member Access Boating Program will continue. Please see a comprehensive article, with all the details, further in the newsletter.

If the heat is too much for you to be out on the water, there is no shortage of things to do at the Club. The Olympics will be heralded in on Friday, August 5. with a viewing party for the Opening Ceremonies. Also, keep an eye out for the repeat of the standing-room-only presentation by our own Ken Malley, the honorary chair of the USS Zumwalt’s Commissioning Committee, about this first in a new class of state-of-the-art Navy destroyers. The USS Zumwalt will be commissioned in Baltimore October 15th as part of the first-ever Maryland Fleet Week and Baltimore Air Show, www.mdfleetweek.com.

Last, but certainly not least, National Rum Day is Tuesday, August 16! Sounds like a national holiday for EYC! Keep an eye out for details, but I promise there WILL be rum at EYC that night.

Although we do love having a good time at EYC, it is not all fun and games, believe it or not. There has been some serious work going on in a variety of committees. The House Committee is getting ready to launch a survey about the food at the Club. The House Committee will be using the survey to determine if the Club is doing a good job or where there needs to be improvement. Keep in mind, this survey is only about food. Please keep an eye out for the Survey Monkey link in the coming days.

The Commodore-appointed special committee, B.O.A.T. (Better Operations Advisory Team), is working away on their 30,000-foot-level assessment of EYC. We do not yet have a date when they will be presenting their recommendations to the EYC Board, but once they do I will be sure to share the recommendations with the membership.

Treasurer Clayton Miller and FinComm have just completed a Replacement Reserve Study for EYC. This study provides an inventory of the common community facilities and infrastructure components that require periodic replacement. It also provides a general view of the condition of the components and an effective financial plan to fund the projected replacements.

The great news is that we are in much better shape than we anticipated! Shewh! We’ll get this up on the member side of the website as soon as it is ready for prime time.

Bylaws Committee and the Nominating Committee are both gathering themselves for the year. The Bylaws Committee will be chaired by Past Commodore Scott Miller. He has agreed to serve for the next year and a half as chair and will be asking the rest of the committee to do the same. Nominating Committee is being chaired by Lou Bennett and he is working on filling the last vacant positions on that committee.

Lots of great stuff going on at EYC and lots to be incredibly proud about. Thank you for allowing me the honor to helm this fantastic ride!

Did I mention there will be rum at EYC on August 16th??

See you on the water!

Heather
