January 1, 2017:

Happy New Year!

Come celebrate the last hours of the 2016 with your fellow EYCers. In true EYC style, New Year’s Eve is a dress-as-you-want event and there is something for everyone, starting with family and early bird options and running on through the evening with great food, music, dancing, and, of course, the fireworks. We will ring in the New Year with the best view in town of the fireworks and a champagne toast...although a Mount Gay toast may be more appropriate....

Last year's NYE party was perfect with this new format and a great time was had by all. Dinner was there for those who wanted a formal dinner, and there was bar food for those who wanted to hang out in the bar. Those who wanted to dress up, dressed up (if you want to break out that formal dress or tuxedo, go for it!) and others were happy in their jeans and fleeces. It's EYC, come as you want!

As has been the tradition, on New Year’s Day the kitchen is closed, and instead we have our EYC Pot Luck Extravaganza from 11:30 am to 6:00 pm. Featured will be tables crammed with delectables from members’ kitchens, last night’s leftovers, or takeout supplied by the less culinarily talented. Plan to catch a Bowl game or watch the sailboat racers in AYC’s Hangover Bowl. We'll also have a competition for ugly holiday sweaters and ugly ties, so deck yourselves out ... FAR out! Bring something tasty to share (the kitchen is ABSOLUTELY OFF LIMITS) and serving utensils (plates/eating utensils are provided). Be sure to bring along a $20 for the Fabulous 50/50 Raffle, to benefit the Junior program (don't forget cash for tips for the bartenders, too.)

We are going to continue the celebrations with the Skippers’ Appreciation Party on Sunday, January 8. We have lots to celebrate—a FABULOUS parade this year AND, if you have not heard, the Eastport Yacht Club Light Parade WON the USA Today’s Top Holiday Parade contest! WHOOO-HOOOO! Congratulations to all the Lights Parade Elves and Skippers and their crews for a wonderful, and with out incident, parade this year!

After all of the celebrating if you are looking for a little peace and quiet and brain food, we’ve got that. The schedule at EYC this winter is chockfull of a variety of opportunities to improve a skill/knowledge you already have or to learn something new.

New this year and perfect for a January night, the Environmental Committee is taking us to warm waters and coral reefs on January 11, the first in a series of water-related lectures—different from on-the-water related lectures. Those start with the Cruise Committee’s winter seminars, Race Committee training, Team Racing Summit, and an Advanced Race Management Seminar. Lots of good brain food and something for everyone!

The quiet and cold of winter is always a good time to do some planning. We will do some of that with an All-Chairs Workshop on Saturday, January 21. Information from this workshop, in conjunction with reports from 2016—Capital Reserve Study, Long Range Planning Report, Nominating Committee Report, 2016 Committee Chairs workshop, and the BOAT (Better Operations Advisory Team) report—will be used by the Executive Board this year to create an EYC Strategic Plan for the next five years.

The New Year often heralds change. Family Movie Night returns in 2017, but with a new format. Our youngest members are invited to come down for dinner and a show on January 13 at 6 p.m. Dinner will be on the Lido Deck (conference room) and “Finding Nemo” will play in the Aft Deck—all are encouraged to bring a bean bag chair and a blanket for the utmost comfort.

Trivia Night has a new premier! Trivia Meister, or Trivia Madame, Monica Arnold takes the helm for this winter’s trivia season starting Thursday, January 12. Competition is fierce and dining room tables are in high demand, so gather your team and make a reservation so you are not left out in the cold. A very special thank you to First Past Trivia Meister Tobias Sullivan for establishing this wonderful winter distraction at EYC and leading it the past several years.

As the first firework goes off to mark the New Year on January 1, it rings in another important change at EYC. Midnight officially marks the change of the EYC Executive Board. I am pleased to welcome Chris Chadwick as Fleet Captain and Mark Jones as Keeper of the Log for 2017. I would like to personally thank and recognize Kirk Gunn and Kathy Downs for all of their hard work, dedication, and thoughtfulness as Board members on behalf of the membership of EYC.

Finally, New Years is a time for resolutions. Unfortunately, resolutions are often associated with deprivation. In the spirit of EYC, I propose that instead of promising to remove something from our lives in the name of the New Year, we instead promise to add something.

I think that EYC’s resolutions for 2017 should be to have even more fun and silliness as a Club and to get out on the water more. I believe these are resolutions we can keep!

Best wishes to you all for a wonderful, healthy, happy, and boat-filled 2017!
