October 1, 2013:  For those looking for a party, we are inside two weeks and counting down for the biggest party of the year, The Boat Show Bash. The event will once again take place on the Saturday of the US Sailboat Show, October 12 this year. With three bands, great food and MountGay as sponsor, no EYC member should miss it. Better yet, volunteer some time and get a discounted ticket.

September was busy month for our Race Committee. They ran a race course for CBYRA Race week, ran two days of racing for the J/22 East Coast Championship and were part of the team that put on the Hospice Cup. After a little breather during the boat shows, things heat up again as EYC hosts the J/70 Fall Brawl (10/19-20) followed by the J/80 East Coast Championship (10/25-27). Talking about those J/80s, next year EYC will be the host for the J/80 World Championship.

September 10, 2013: It’s been a busy couple of weekends at the club with more to come.  A couple of items have come to my attention that I would like to share some thoughts on, as well as ask for cooperation with.

As many of you saw, we had a tent out back all weekend.  This was the location for a fabulous Saturday evening wedding and our crab feast on Sunday. In addition we had outside events on Saturday and Sunday in the dining room. This is a rare circumstance when so many things hit on the same weekend.

August 1, 2013:

July certainly epitomized the dog days of summer with nights that were too uncomfortable to sit outside on the deck. With that said, I heard more than one positive comment about the covered sections of deck and the fans. I think you would have to agree these areas have worked out very well for a variety of reasons. Funny thing, that feature wasn’t part of the original plan and grew out of a need to meet fire code. Guess we’ll have to thank the city for that one.

The building and grounds have really started to take on a more finished feel. While this process still has more to come, we owe a huge thanks to the entire B&G team. With Tom Mullan leading the group and Angela Eggleston heading up the landscaping subcommittee our clubhouse and grounds are in good hands. As you go about your normal use of the club, remember that volunteers are the primary caretakers.

September 1, 2013:  Summer is over, but that only means things are about to get real busy. The local racing scene heats up with major regattas from the first of September through the middle of November. For a racing sailor and Annapolitan this is best time of the year. Sandwiched in between racing events are several EYC cruises. a town hall meeting, two full weeks of boat shows (including our 7th annual Boat Show Bash), a pig roast and first-ever out door movie night.

Among the upcoming events is Hospice Cup XXXII, an old standard in the region which a race-management team from EYC and AYC has taken on for the first time this year. We’re proud to add Hospice Cup to our list of successful charity events including the Leukemia Cup in June and the recently concluded CRAB Regatta in which folks are encouraged to raise more than a sail to benefit others. The date is September 21, and registration is open, including for a special Hospice Class for those who don’t normally race. There also are some ancillary fund raising events in support of the regatta; keep a lookout in the Newsblast and on the website for notices of these.

July 1, 2013: June was certainly a month for town hall meetings. The Long Range Planning and Finance committees both presented data to the membership. We should all be thankful for the hard work and dedication that these volunteers have put in. For these groups there is no party or fun event at the end of the effort. It’s all done strictly for the long term benefit of membership.

The Long Range Planning group presented data that was several years in the making. We received a high level review across a wide range of subjects pertinent to the club’s future direction. I would not characterize any of the findings as unexpected. And in fact, in quite a few circumstances actions were already underway that matched up with the data’s recommendations.
