This Thursday, December 5. All cruisers are cordially invited to a Pot Luck Dinner at Rob and Carroll Greve's home, 1028 Harbor Dr. (Annapolis Roads) on Thursday, 12 December, at 6:30 p.m. Bring a dish to share and BYOB. Bring any "mystery silverware," unidentified children, or other items which were left on your boat. (Note: the club dining room is closed that night for Lights Parade Skippers Meeting.)
The next Cruise Committee monthly meeting will be Thursday, December 19, at 7:30 p.m., downstairs at the club. ALL cruisers are welcome; please bring your feedback from this year and your ideas for next year. (Note: in 2014, our monthly meetings will change to the 4th Thursday.)
Winter Seminars: The Cruise Committee sponsors three seminars in the winter. The dates are Saturday afternoons, January 25, February 22 and March 15. The topics are generally cruising experiences and/or “how to” items. On January 25, the topic is “IT for Cruising,” organized by Cynthia Palmer. On February 22, it’s Brian and Clare Barrone on "Cruising before Kids" (to New Zealand!). On March 15, our Greg and Vicki Shea will give a presentation on their 7 year circumnavigation (how’s that for an experience?).
Submitted by Cruise Committee Chair Bob Arias, 16 October 2013
In addition to an active cruising schedule, the Cruise Committee worked on several outreach activities this year. Our goal was to raise awareness of, and participation in, cruising events among the entire EYC membership, especially among new members, young members, and people new to cruising.
Outreach activities included the following:
In 2013 the Cruise Committee coordinated close to 20 on-water cruise events plus a number of club-based social events. Some events were “come by land or sea,” enabling members to come by either boat or land yacht. We hosted several pot luck dinners and seminars on boating topics during the winter, which were well attended. The annual April Icebreaker Cruise/Dinner was held at Deep Creek Restaurant. This year's rendezvous locations included the Magothy, the Rhode, the Severn, the Wye, the Rappahannock, and the Chester Rivers and Baltimore, St Michaels, Rock Hall, Chestertown, Cambridge, and Plum and Whitehall Creeks. We’re happy report that quite a few new and younger EYC members (or at least new to cruising) have joined the cruisers ranks.
The Thursday evening cruising ‘rendezvous’ at the club for dinner has grown in popularity with 20-30 cruisers participating each week. At least 3 impromptu weekend cruises started at these dinners.
Cruise Committee members include Bob Arias (Chair), Kathy Arias, Roger and Cyndy Feldman, Rob and Carroll Greve, Bill and Anne Sieling, Bob and Jan Miller, and Wally and Jean Gribbin. Commodore Malkin and Vice Commodore Miller often attended and were very supportive. The Cruise Committee meets on the third Thursday of most months and meetings are open to all. We have received excellent input from some non-committee EYC members who have participated in our meetings.
We've moved the 150-name cruisers' mailing list from the chairman's computer to a central server. This will enable designated Cruise Committee members to communicate with cruisers anytime from anywhere. After finding "My EYC" to be inadequate for our communication needs, we are using "simplelists.com" effectively. Many thanks to Nancy Noyes and Ed Wells for helping us to accomplish this task. Next, we will work on automating cruise signups.
As cruising activity expands within EYC, the Cruise Committee has discussed the need to form subcommittees/work groups (e.g., communication, publicity and event planning) to conduct the committee's work efficiently and effectively, as well as accommodating different cruising styles such as day trippers and power cruisers.
"Thank you" to all the volunteers who acted as cruise coordinators and anchor boats this year. These include Wally and Jean Gribbin, Roger and Cyndy Feldman, Paul and Judy Chatterton, Cynthia Palmer and Jim Brooks, Cindy Hooper and Colin Watmough, Bob Clopp and Prue Clendening, Dennis Jay and Julia Newhouse, Rob and Carroll Greve, Pete and Jane Chambliss, and Bill and Anne Sieling. Note many are "new" on this list. And a special thanks to Kathy Arias for helpful advice and putting up with my crazy ideas.
A note regarding the chairmanship: I have served in this position for many years and believe it's time for a new chairman. We need new blood and new ideas. I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to serve as the Cruise Committee Chair and to work (and play) with so many dedicated EYC member volunteers and staff. Kathy and I will gladly remain on the committee to assist with the transition.
