Around the House: February 2018

Theresa Somes

After a little rest up House Committee kicked off 2018 with a Rock the Red Party to start our January out.

We were able to get out of the cold and snowy weather by traveling to sunny Spain with our Wine & Tapas Tasting. We enjoyed 5 different wines and delicious food pairings to go with them. We ended the tour with Spanish Coffee and dessert.

Thank You to Christine Minnick from Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits for taking us on this fantastic tour and giving us some wonderful information on Spanish wines. A big Thank You goes out to Doff and our wonderful kitchen staff for the delicious food we were able to enjoy. Thank You to our AGM Glenn Looney and the staff, who were a huge help in making this event a big success. I also want to thank our helpers for the event: Tom & Trudy Stalder, Cheryl LeCourt and Barb Roussillon. I couldn’t have done it without all of these great folks.

There will be more wine tastings coming up. Watch the bulletin board and Newsblast for more details.

We kicked off with our first Speakeasy for the year by finding out “How we can add some excitement to a brunch?” If you missed this one keep on the lookout for more Speakeasy events. “Remember, if you’re learning something, you’re not drinking.”

You are now wondering, “What is a Speakeasy?” It is a sit-down event where our own Chief Cocktail Historian Mike Thompson gives us a history, the ingredients, and shows us how to make the different cocktails for each featured topic. There are samplings of the cocktails and food pairings to go with them. You get to take a special glass home from the event along with a booklet of the featured drinks to make yourself.

There could be a surprise or two thrown in. This is a reserved and limited seating event. We are not able to do walk-ins. Watch the Newsblast and bulletin board for the next one. Read more ...

Celebrate Founders' Day October 13

Early EYCFriday, October 13, happens to be an auspicious date in EYC history. It's the day and date in 1980 when the founding meeting of EYC was held upstairs at Marmaduke's Pub. The meeting was called by the 11 members of the Steering Committee (founders), and about 200 invitations had been issued. The result was ... well, you can see for yourself. This year, on Friday, October 13, we'll celebrate that significant and happy event with a party (of course) and lots more, including the rollout of the long-anticipated EYC History Project with the public release of the official EYC history book and the premiere screening of the accompanying video.

Rumor has it that all -- or nearly all -- surviving founders and many past commodores long relocated to other waterfront venues will return to join the festivities, and EYC members of any and all tenures and membership status are invited to join the celebration. It will be a throwback event, taking pricing for beer, wine, and -- naturally -- Mount Gay drinks back to 1980 levels. Even Wes Wilde's notorious EYC Punch will be available, all for just $2 per drink. You want food? We'll be emulating the early days and calling Rocco's Pizza for deliveries.

The party will fill the lower level of the clubhouse, with dual venues for the video screening, continuously from 6:30 p.m. on. Those who prefer something other than the aforementioned pizza and cheap drinks can find it upstairs in the bar and dining room, where regular bar service will be available, along with a limited supper menu. There's no charge to attend, but your RSVP will help us plan. If you know of former members who would like to be included, please pass along this article to them, as well!

rsvp here thanks

Now is also the time to take advantage of the chance to pre-purchase your very own copy of the EYC history project book and DVD combo, just $25 including tax for orders received before the 13th, $30 plus tax starting October 13.  Here's what EYC Historian (and book editor) merf Moerschel has to say about it.EYCHistoryBook

There’s a lot of talk these days on the media about ancestry. Where did we come from? Just provide some saliva, send in a few bucks and back comes a pie chart showing ethnicity and geographic origins.

Ever wonder just how EYC came about? Well there’s a short blurb on our web site and new members get a brief brain dump on EYC’s origins, but these are snapshots at best.

Several years ago, a small group of old hands started gathering data on our club. Meeting minutes, photos, newsletters and anything that spoke to our origins quickly filled a filing cabinet, several boxes and part of one of the club’s store rooms. Stories, anecdotes, and recollections of our founders, past commodores and long time members gave further life to the hard copy. The idea of doing a book that traced our history and video-taping the early members quickly evolved.

This three year effort has resulted in a book, Eastport Yacht Club: Back to the Future 1980-2015, and an accompanying DVD of first hand accounts.

Our first press run is limited, so don't miss your chance: Order your copy today!

Going back to our roots, we'll be relying on a host of volunteers to sell food and drink tickets, pass out pizza, fulfill book/DVD orders, and man the Outfitters station. We're also looking for an event photographer or two to help us record this event for posterity. Or blackmail. Whatever. If you can spare a couple hours, your help will be much appreciated.
