Around the House: January 2018

Theresa Somes

It is hard to believe that 2017 is coming to a close, but the House Committee Elves were busy getting our favorite club decorated for the holidays.

Thank You to Carey Kirk and all of the wonderful helpers that came to prep and help decorate. Everyone was able to kick back and enjoy the holiday decorations at the ‘Get Your Elf On!’ party along with great food and drink specials. We even had a special visit from Mrs. Clause who joined in the fun.

Thank You to Nancy Elsaesser for making the Gingerbread party a happy success. All the children decorated and created beautiful houses. Santa visited and the children sang jingle bells to him. She is so thankful and blessed by everyone who has supported this event. She knows many families have made this a Christmas tradition and it's very exciting to see the children grow from decorators to volunteers. Jean Gribbin (Wally too) who have been on her team from the beginning. A special thank you to everyone, the builders who made this possible on Wednesday night "Thank You". The staff was fabulous and very helpful. She loves it when our elf participates. Good job everyone, Merry Christmas.

The EYC 6th Annual Cookie Exchange was another sweet success! There were more bar judges this year than ever to taste some of the best cookies around. Chocolate chips were the favorite ingredient this year (necessitating a category change from Best Store Bought to Best Chocolate Chip cookie).

And the winners are:

  • Best EYC theme: Joanne Lavender-Oatmeal/Dried Rum Cranberry with Toasted Walnuts Cookie
  • Best Holiday theme: tie- Quinn & Zane Barone”yum, yum, yum" cookie and Clare- Cherry & Honey Almond Shortbread
  • Best Chocolate Chip cookie: Hadley Chadwick- Chocolate chip Cookie
  • Best Chocolate cookie: Barbara Small- Chocolate chip "Santa Fav" Cookie
  • Best Tasting cookie: Liz Filter- Pistachio Thumbprints with Strawberry Jam
  • Commodore choice: Jill Rajaee- White Cap Cookie

Thanks to all who participated in baking and judging!

We will end 2017 in EYC style with a great party of music, dancing, food and beverage. We will welcome the arrival of 2018 with a champagne toast and midnight fireworks.

After a little rest up time House Committee will kick off 2018 with a Wine & Tapas Tasting on Friday, January 19th. Watch the Newsblast and bulletin board for more details.

Are you looking for something to add some excitement to a brunch? Tired of going to your brother’s house for brunch and getting a Bloody Mary that looks like a salad bar? Does the Mimosa seem dull and drab to you, while you’re in the throughs of winter? You need to attend the EYC Speakeasy Brunch Cocktail event on Sunday, January 28th where our own mixologist Mike Thompson will add some excitement for us. So begin your brunch on a high note and come on down to the Speakeasy. Watch the Newsblast and bulletin board for more details.

In the dining room Lobster Night returns on Saturdays. You will need to make your reservations by Thursday before each Saturdays lobster night. This is a huge event and sells out.

As with every holiday season we’ll keep to our commitment of remembering the less fortunate in our community. We will take donations for the Lighthouse Shelter and the local SPCA shelter. We have 2 donation boxes in the foyer and will remain there until January 15th. Please check the bulletin board for the items that are needed to help them.

We value your comments and suggestions so please fill out a comment card when you receive it with your bill. You can also find them on the table by the hostess stand.

Reminder: the House Committee meets every month on the first Wednesday at 6:30 in the conference room. Because of the clubhouse closing for maintenance, however, our next meeting will be on January 10 instead. All are welcome to attend a meeting and see if you would like to join us on a regular basis.

Upcoming Events for February:

  • February 10th – Speakeasy-Mardi Gras
  • February 13th – Mardi Gras
  • February 14th – Valentine’s Day

Watch the Newsblast and Bulletin Board for more great events brought to you by House Committee.

Happy New Year from your House Committee!

Around the House: July 2018

Our first Music on the Deck with Ellis Woodward started us out with some rain but the fun was moved into the clubhouse for everyone to enjoy. We didn’t forget our Dads on Father’s Day who were treated to some great specials and were entertained with Music on the Deck with Blue Suede Bop.

June is almost over and July Fourth is going to be here before we know it. This year’s EYC celebration should be really great, with live music from Major Company starting at 6 p.m., a sumptuous cookout buffet, and, of course, the best seats in town for the fireworks.

Guest Policy: EYC members and their immediate families who live under the same roof are admitted free, but there will be a $10 charge for guests ($5 for children under 11) (Cash Only). In addition to immediate families, member guests are restricted to 2 non-member adults and their related children. The club will open for the July 4th festivities beginning at 5 p.m.

Important: If you are entertaining on your boat in the marina, please plan ahead and leave your guests names at the office by July 2nd so they may be signed in properly without the $10 charge. This helps with the check in process.

There will be a check-in table set-up for the festivities for you to sign in any guests and to receive your wristbands.

A note about EYC Food Service on the Fourth: The clubhouse will be closed until the party starts at 5 p.m.; regular Wednesday night service from the Galley and Dining Room menus will not be available that evening.

Keep your eyes on the Newsblast and for flyers around the clubhouse for more details.

Join us on July 14th for our Bastille Wine Bistro and Café. We will have a special tasting of French wines and perfectly paired French food. A wine expert will be on hand to talk to us about the wines. This is a reserved and limited seating event. We are not able to do walk-ins. Watch the Newsblast and bulletin board for flyers around the clubhouse for more details.

We continue the fun on the 21st with our next Speakeasy where we will feature Three Ingredient Cocktails. Our own cocktail mixologist Mike Thompson was inspired to create this Speakeasy by a young man who asked him one day, “Tell me how to make some drinks.” Mike began to explain how to make a margarita, but the young man interrupted and said, “I can’t remember more than three ingredients, please make it simple.”

So for all of you who can’t remember more than three ingredients, we bring you Three Ingredient Cocktails. There are old and new classics, cocktails that have stories behind them and have appeared in film and literature, after all if you’re learning, you’re not really drinking. The three cocktails are The Gimlet, The Cosmopolitan, and The Martini. There will be food pairings to go with our cocktails and there is always a surprise to two. This is a reserved and limited seating event. We are not able to do walk-ins. Watch the Newsblast and bulletin board for flyers around the clubhouse for more details.

House Committee has a brief survey on food service at EYC for you to take. The goal of the survey is to find out from as many members as possible what you think about the menu offerings, the quality, consistency and pricing. It really is a short survey taking only a couple of minutes of your time and this is your opportunity to let us know your thoughts on this. Your names will be confidential, used for no purpose other than to know who has participated to help us improve our club experiences. Click here to take the survey. Please take the few minutes to take the survey and make your opinion count. We appreciate your input on this and Thank You.

The club is now serving lunch on Thursdays so come in and take a break and enjoy the view.

Have a good look at the calendar as we have frequent theme nights or events during the month that are not publicized - you just gotta look for them.

We value your comments and suggestions so please fill out a comment card when you receive it with your bill. You can also find them on the table by the hostess stand.

Reminder: the House Committee meets every month on the first Wednesday at 6:30 in the conference room. All are welcome to attend a meeting and see if you would like to join us on a regular basis.

Note – July’s meeting will be held on July 11th at 6:30

Upcoming Events for August:

  • August 5th – Music on the Deck
  • August 16th – National Rum Day
  • August 19th – Music on the Deck

Watch the Newsblast and Bulletin Board for more great events brought to you by House Committee.

Celebrate July Fourth at EYC

Can you believe it? July Fourth is on the horizon. This year’s EYC celebration should be really great, with live music from Major Company starting at 6 p.m., a sumptuous cookout buffet, and, of course, the best seats in town for the fireworks.

Guest Policy:  As in the past, EYC members and their immediate families who live under the same roof are admitted free, but there will be a $10 charge for guests ($5 for children under 11). In addition to immediate families, member guests are restricted to 2 non-member adults and their related children.  For clarification on the EYC Event Guest Policy, please see here.  As always, no reservations required.

The club will be not be open for lunch on July 4th this year, and will open for the July 4th festivities beginning at 5 p.m. This year we will be offering two dining choices: a casual buffet upstairs in the dining room will feature the usual burgers and hotdogs, plus fried chicken, barbecued ribs, and much, much more, all for $20/person, $10/kids aged 3-11 (under 3, free). On the waterfront lawn, it's backyard cookout-style, with hamburgers ($6), chicken sandwiches ($6) and hot dogs ($4), served with cole slaw ($1) and/or chips ($1), a la carte right off the grill.

NOTE: In the event of inclement weather, the party will go on as scheduled, with dinner and music, regardless of the status of the fireworks display.
