About the Party

The “Best Sailors' Party in History” is coming up in just a few weeks. Two days before the Volvo Ocean Race fleet begins Leg 6 of the 32,700-mile race at the Bay Bridge, it will be time to party in NapTown as Eastport Yacht Club, the Severn Sailing Association and all of Annapolis salutes the brave Volvo Open 70 racers and their shore crews.

This will be our third huge party--given for 6,000 of our closest friends. The first Annapolis Salute was for the Whitbred Ocean Race crews in 1998, the second for the crews of the Volvo Ocean Race of 2002. Sailing magazine has dubbed our event the “Best Sailors Party in History!” after the 1998 Race. We know how to give a party and we guarantee you a great time with tasty food and drink and live music.

The Party, will run from 5 to 11 p.m. and will feature Volvo Crews, showcase the musical talents of local and regional favorites which include:

  • Joanna Cotten
  • Them Eastport Oyster Boys
  • Bens Bones with Dan Haas
  • Matt McConville
  • Dean Rosenthal
  • The Remnants
  • NonFiction
  • Naked Blue

A variety of foods will be available for sale in the Annapolis Salute Food Court catered by Red Hot & Blue Memphis BBQ and Phillips Seafood Annapolis.

Events in Annapolis

The Annapolis Salute is one of several Baltimore/Annapolis stopover events that will begin on April 17 when the fleet is expected to arrive in the Chesapeake (See map of the finish line plans). For a complete schedule of regional events, see the Ocean Race Chesapeake website. Events include educational activities for kids, the Baltimore Waterfront Festival, and In-Port Racing which Volvo racers take very seriously as this adds to their race points toward victory. In-Port Racing in the Chesapeake is planned to take place just north of Annapolis and the Bay Bridge, off the Magothy River.

On Thursday, May 4, the fleet will leave Baltimore bound for Annapolis in a glorious Parade of Sail (See map of parade) expected to begin at noon. What a sight that will be as the boats come into Annapolis Harbor and City Dock where the Maryland Maritime Heritage Festival will be getting underway. It will run until the start of Leg 6 on Sunday, May 7.

The fleet will be blessed at the dock right before departure and spectators can watch the race start from their boats or from the Bay Bridge as the Bay Bridge Walk will take place that day as well.

For everything you could possibly want to know about the Baltimore/Annapolis Stopover
including what to see, what to do, where and when...
