Our Opti program uses the Blue Dragon Pram designed for ages 6-11 & up to 100lbs. We offer several levels of learn to sail including: Opti Tots/Novice (7 & under), Seaman/Beginner, Mate/Intermediate, Skipper/Advanced.

  • Opti Tots, Novice, Ages 6-8
    • *No experience needed.
      This class is geared for young children who are comfortable on the water. This introductory class emphasizes FUN while teaching basic terminology, seamanship, boat handling, and safety. This class incorporates fun activities both on and off the water to build confidence, teamwork, and new friends! Parents/guardians are welcome and encouraged to participate. This class is being offered only in the evenings this year.

      Five Evenings: 5:30 - 7:30PM Cost: $280/$250 EYC Member

      Session 1: Tuesdays, June 18 - July 30 (5:30 - 7:30PM) (Rain day extended date)
      Session 2: Thursdays, June 20  - August 1 (5:30 - 7:30PM) (Rain day extended date) 

  • Opti Seaman, Beginner, Ages 7-9
    • *No experience required.
      This class introduces basic seamanship, including rigging, and steering and sail trim. Through innovative and fun on-the-water activities, kids are introduced to water safety, boat controls, sail trim, basic sailing maneuvers, basic seamanship, wind direction, sailing a course, and STEM activities. Sailors will sail solo or in pairs depending on size and comfort level.

      Session 4: July 1 - July 5 || No camp held on July 4th, price is adjusted

  • Opti Mate, Intermediate, Ages 8-10 | 40+lbs
    • *Need basic sailing knowledge and experience.
      This class is a continuation of the Opti Seaman course. Sailors will sail solo to build confidence skippering on all points of sail in a variety of wind conditions. Activities include on-water games to refine boat handling skills, longer sails, environmental education and STEAM activities. This is also a perfect refresher course to prepare for Opti Skipper and GFF.

      Session 2: June 17 - June 21 
      Session 6: July 15 - July 19

  • Opti Skipper, Advanced, Ages 8-11 | 40+lbs
    • * Must be proficient at solo skippering and have completed Opti Intermediate.
      This class is a continuation of the Opti Mate Course focusing on more advanced skills and into the fun of junior racing. The program offers confident solo skippers the opportunity to learn and develop their racing skills at the junior level. All our Opti Skippers will expand their skills through daily lessons, reviews and more advanced on-the-water drills. Our sailors will end the week with a fun regatta.

  • Bay/STEM Week, Ages 8-11
    • * Must have beginner sailing experience.
      A great addition to the summer! This one week full day class is an adventure based program which focuses on building fundamental sailing and boating knowledge while exploring the Chesapeake Bay and its ecology, history and culture. Students will explore environmental and STEM activities through field trips on and off the water. Sailors will be able to try our entire fleet of sailboats (+ larger cruising sailboat/weather permitting), paddleboards, kayaks and powerboats for a diverse learning AND fun experience!

  • Junior Bay Cruisers, Ages 8-10, all levels
    • (No sailing experience needed)

      A one-week, half day adventure based course for younger children which will introduce fundamental sailing and boating skills. We will explore the Chesapeake Bay and it ecology with lots of opportunity to 'get wet'. Students will engage in environmental and STEAM (Science, Tech, Art, Math) activities both on and off the water. Sailors will mainly sail J22s with instructors, and also utilize paddleboards, kayaks, and powerboats for a diverse learning experience. Lots of on/in-water time!
