The Eastport Yacht Club Junior Fleet is happy to extend sailing instruction to Adult EYC Member and Non-Members.

EYC is at U.S. Sailing Accredited Keelboat Sailing School!

We will utilize our fleet of J22s and Zest to get you at on the water at the helm of either keelboats or dinghies with confidence and enthusiasm to be sailors for life! Classes are taught by U.S. Sailing Certified Instructors and the maximum class size is 4 students per boats. We host multi-day or evening sessions throughout the season.

There is a crew spot for all levels; Learn to Sail, Intermediate, Advanced Sailor/Beginner Racer, Women's Only Team & Match Racers. Build your skills and join the EYC Team Race team or Member Watercraft Access Program to take out Zest or J22's for recreation or racing. 

Women's Sailing now being offered on Summer's Thursday nights. Registration can be found via our Active website linked for all of our sailing courses.

 

  • Beginner Learn-to-Sail - Keelboat (Ages 16+) April-October
    • This Introductory course is designed to help new sailors feel comfortable on a boat and to give you the basic skills needed for crewing on smaller keelboats with an experienced skipper. These include:

      • This Basic sailboat-handling skills, including helming the boat and trimming the sails
      • How to interpret and react to the wind
      • How to tie the most frequently-used sailors’ knots
      • How to rig and de-rig a small keelboat
      • Basic on-the-water safety skills
      • Sailing vocabulary, including parts of the boat and sails, terms for effective crew communication on the water, points of sail, and more.


      Those unsure of their current sailing ability after a long break or taught by non-professionals are strongly recommended to take this course.

  • Intermediate - Keelboat (Ages 16+) April-October
    • During this fast-paced course, you will learn how to:

      • Plan and execute departures and returning to the dock under sail, from all wind directions
      • Perform a person overboard recovery
      • Heave-to
      • Reef sails


      To decide if you are ready for this class, please review the following questions - if you can say YES to all of them, this is a great time for you to take this class! This is not a class to be taken immediately after the Learn to Sail Keelboat course, practice time between is recommended to make sure you get the most out of this Intermediate level class.

      • Do you know how to rig and derig a keelboat?
      • Can you smoothly execute tacks and jibes, handling both the tiller and mainsail simultaneously?
      • Are you adept at identifying where the wind is coming from, able to identify your current point of sail, and trim the sails appropriately?
      • Can you drive the boat smoothly and efficiently from a port tack beam reach to a starboard tack broad reach?
      • Do you know vocabulary for basic parts of the boat and sails, running and standing rigging, and points of sail?
      • Can you tie a bowline, cleat hitch, stopper knot, and square knot?

  • Introduction to Dinghy Sailing/Racing (Ages 16+) May-October
    • Not recommended for adults over 6’ 2” and 200 lbs. Must be physically capable to pull oneself-back into a capsized boat.
      This evening class taught in the Zest or Feva and focuses on fundamental dinghy sailing including terminology, rigging, knots, equipment care, stowage, points of sail, boat handling, racing right-of-way rules, safety, and capsize procedures.
      Summer Session 
      Dinghy Instruction is offered during most evenings after camps have concluded. Lessons are offered in grouping of 4 and may be flexibly scheduled with the Waterfront Manager throughout the Summer season!
      Four Weeknights: 5:30-8:00PM  Dates: TBD
      Cost: $300 Non-Member / $275 EYC Member / $55 Drop In session

  • Family Learn To Sail Together, Ages 8 and up, Beginner
    • This program is offered during the Spring/Fall and Summer Junior Sailing Program for parents/grandparents/guardians the opportunity to Learn Together!

      The program is a Learn-to-Sail curriculum that teaches students the basics of boat handling, seamanship, safety, and teamwork. The curriculum will develop competence and confidence in our sailors in a safe and fun learning environment for both adults and children. The course will mainly use our J22 keelboat fleet with options to try other boats (ability & size appropriate), and fleet of kayaks and paddleboards (weather dependent).

      Children must be 8 yrs old and of course no age limit for 'Big Kids'. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis with limited class sizes.

  • 'First Sail'
    • Not sure if sailing is for you?
      Come on out and give sailing a try for casual introduction using our J22 keelboats.

  • Private Lessons
    • We also offer private lessons on the Opti, Sunfish, Feva (doublehanded), Club FJ, or J/22 keelboat. Cost $55/hour for an individual and $35/hour per person for groups of 2-4. If interested contact Waterfront Manager.

  • Advanced Sailing & Team Racing - J/22
    • Join the EYC Team! Annapolis Match Race Center provides 3 J22’s for members to participate as crew or skipper. Get involved as ‘Master’ to mentor OR to Learn. Includes opportunities to run races and learn to umpire the races. Contact Preston Senior for more information at [email protected]

      Match Racing Clinic Hosted by Dave Perry
      Dave will coach the tactics and strategies needed to be competitive and successful in match racing on the National level, including the Pre-Start, Upwind and Downwind Tactics, and Killing Penalties. On the water, Dave will run the sailors through all the scenarios, with on-the-spot feedback, and video replay after sailing. In addition, he will give much instruction and feedback on how to sail a keelboat fast and do all the boat handling needed to be successful. Dave will also explain the significant rule changes being used in match racing (see Appendix C of The Racing Rules of Sailing).Match racing skills are also very helpful in more advanced team and fleet racing where being able to control an opponent, and avoid being controlled yourself, can be race or series-winning skills
