'Around the Green Can' December 2022

This December is truly a month of celebrations with the 40th Anniversary of the EYC Lights Parade and other holiday events including our upcoming Environmental Committee’s Chesapeake Bay Holiday Celebration on December 2.
We had several major “green” accomplishments this past year including a successful clean regatta season, further progress with our water quality and oyster efforts, and extensive education and outreach efforts. 2022 Environmental Committee activities are summarized in our Annual Report to the membership at the EYC 2022 Annual Meeting (click here).
We also presented our Annual Awards at the meeting including Volunteer of the Year, the 2022 Clean Regatta Award and our Green Can Award. To learn more about our EYC environmental efforts and also the multi-partner Chesapeake Bay Program, which is entering its 40th year, join us for the EYC Chesapeake Bay Holiday Celebration on December 2.
November was a busy month with the Annual Meeting activities, the Thanksgiving Holiday and winter preparations.
The Leftover Bowl marked the end of a successful clean regatta season with several “gold level” regattas and even another platinum certification for the 2022 CRAB Cup.
In mid-November, we also lowered our 40 oyster cages to ensure survival over the winter of the baby oysters growing on the spat covered oyster shells in the cages.
The major event of the month was the presentation of our annual awards. The Volunteer of the Year Award went to Bill Ball, our Education /Outreach Co-Coordinator in recognition of his significant contribution to the development of an outstanding 2022 lecture series and educational programs as well as his support of our oyster efforts.
CRAB Cup once again received our Clean Regatta Award for their sustained commitment to the Sailors for the Sea Clean Regatta program and in recognition of their platinum level certification for 2021 and 2022.
Our highest award is the “Green Can Award,” which is presented to a group or organization that has strongly supported EYC’s bay stewardship commitment. This year the Eastport Yacht Club Foundation is the recipient in recognition of their significant contribution to EYC’s environmental and community efforts through their Career Fairs, STEM Program and Scholarships.
Our major event for December will be our Chesapeake Bay Holiday Celebration on Friday, December 2, starting at 5 p.m. in the Aft Deck and Conference Room. We hope you will be able to join us for this special celebration of the federal, multi-state Chesapeake Bay Program which is now beginning its 40th year.
The event will set the stage for a year-long celebration of the bay including a monthly lecture series focused on bay issues. To kick-off the celebration, we will have a reception (cash bar) and free oysters on the half shell & hors d’oeuvres in the Aft Deck.
The formal program will begin with a brief introduction by Environmental Committee Co-Chair, Virginia Tippie (First Director of the Chesapeake Bay Program), followed by remarks from our special guest speakers: Dr Kandis Boyd, Director, EPA Chesapeake Bay Program; Dr. Sean Corson, Director, NOAA Chesapeake Bay Program and Ann Swanson, Director, Chesapeake Bay Commission.
Our guest speakers and invited experts have agreed to join us for dinner afterwards in the dining room. Event attendees are welcome to participate in this optional no-host dinner featuring Chesapeake Bay specials and roundtable discussions of bay goals.
Come meet the “stars” that are making a difference for the Chesapeake Bay - Friday, December 2! To help us with our planning please register here.
