'Around the Green Can,' February 2023

The Environmental Committee is focusing on Bay Stewardship this year. Our first lecture of the year was on the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s effort to “Save the Bay.”
In January, EYC also became a formal partner in the Chesapeake Oyster Alliance which has as its goal restoring 10 billion oysters to the bay by 2025. In the upcoming months, the committee will continue to feature programs and activities on a range of bay issues.
On January 25, Hilary Harp Falk, President and CEO, Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) presented a talk entitled “Facing Our Unfinished Challenge to Save and Keep Saved the Chesapeake Bay”. The lecture was well attended in person and via zoom and Facebook.
Ms. Falk is a proven expert in large scale ecosystem restoration having served in executive roles in several organizations including National Wildlife Federation. Her remarks focused on the many CBF programs that are making a difference in the bay including habitat restoration, pollution reduction, environmental education and bay advocacy. This interesting and informative presentation can be viewed on our EYC Facebook page.
Continuing our focus on bay issues, our February 22 lecture will be by Karl Blankenship, Editor-at-Large, Chesapeake Bay Journal. His presentation “30 years of Reporting on Chesapeake Bay: Reflection on Progress and Challenges” will review the history of bay stewardship and discuss current issues from a journalist’s unique perspective. You won’t want to miss this special presentation. Please register for the event here.
Our March 22 lecture will highlight citizen involvement in bay efforts. Kate Fritz, Executive Director & CEO, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, will give a presentation on “The Importance of Community Involvement in Chesapeake Bay Restoration: Acting Locally on Regional Issues.” The Alliance coordinates community involvement for the federal/multi-state Chesapeake Bay Program.
Stay tuned for other interesting EYC environmental programs this spring including a special “Earth Day Celebration” on Saturday, April. 22. In the meantime, please join us for our February and March lectures.
You are also welcome to participate at any time in our ongoing committee activities from clean regattas & green club efforts to oyster restoration & water quality monitoring. The committee (aka “Green Team”) meets at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month. To learn more about our activities go to the EYC Environmental Stewardship webpage.
