'Around the Green Can,' March 2023

Over the winter and spring the Environmental Committee is hosting a series of lectures on the bay and planning a major Earth Day event.
Our February lecture by Karl Blankenship, Editor-at-Large of the Chesapeake Bay Journal had to be postponed due to illness. However, our own Dr. Bill Ball, former Director, Chesapeake Research Consortium, stepped in with a great presentation on the challenges the bay is facing in light of climate change.
Our March 22 lecture by Kate Fritz, CEO of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay will highlight citizen involvement in bay efforts.
In March, the committee will be working on both our oyster wave wall and our oyster gardening programs.
An effort began in early February by team members John Anderson and Jack Turner to systematically document with photos and videos the oyster reef wave wall under our docks. Over the next several weeks when water clarity is good, they will continue to photograph/film the underwater reef using a go-pro.
We will also be raising our oyster cages as the water warms and begin “dunking” the cages on a regular basis to ensure healthy baby oysters on shell to be placed on the Severn River oyster reef this summer.

Plan to join us for our March 22 lecture on “The Importance of Community Involvement in Chesapeake Bay Restoration: Acting Locally on Regional Issues” by Kate Fritz, Executive Director & CEO, Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay.
For the 19+ million people who live, work, and play in the Chesapeake Bay, we all have the ability to positively impact the health of our local rivers and streams. Kate will share her perspective that all impact is local in the Chesapeake, and how all watershed residents can join in the fight for cleaner water starting in our own backyards. We are all part of the pollution solution in the Chesapeake Bay. Please register for the lecture.
Lastly, hold the date – Earth Day, April 22, to join us for an EYC Earth Day/Chesapeake Bay Day Celebration Through Art. Please let us know by March 6 if you may be interested in displaying your own art contributions: including paintings, sculptures, photographs and crafts. For more information, register HERE.
You won’t want to miss this fun day filled with a range of activities including: a gallery show, vendors selling their artwork, an auction, a kids’ workshop, musical entertainment, food & drink specials and great company. It will be a wonderful way to celebrate this special planet called Earth and our beautiful Bay.
